SynthMaven 4: the oriental groove box
An FM-1 firmware for oriental live musicians, turning the standard M-VAVE FM-1 into an oriental groove box.
- Microtuning for maqam: 46 maqam settings, selectable roots and octave boundaries, and custom tuning down to 1 cent in the editors.
- Multi-layer key mapping: four parts per program, stacked or split across the keyboard.
- Groove box and sequencer: eight-lane drums with Maksoom, Wahda, Baladi and Fox grooves, plus 64-step patterns, song arrangement and live recording.
- Song arranger: up to 16 sections, each with a pattern for every track, a drum groove and 1–16 repeats, on the FM-1 or in the editors. You can also turn a jam into an arrangement.
- MainStage-style performance: scenes, a 32-entry setlist and pedal switching, with a Perform screen in the web editor and the SM FM1 iPad app.
- Multi-keyboard support: a separate MIDI input and channel for each layer and the drummer, over USB, TRS or both.
- HYBRID with 64 Vital-derived translations, DX7 sounds and eight factory programs copied from the final saved FM-1 bank (including DX7 Stage and E. Organ): layering, keyboard splits, pan and volume mixing.
- 107 restored classic sound presets plus 42 ACID, VPS and WSEQ presets and an independent eight-lane drum machine alongside all four layers, with a dedicated drum Home screen.
- Global chromatic microtuning with 46 maqam settings, selectable roots and octave boundaries, custom cents editing and scale-aware harmony.
- Scenes, setlists and USB pedal switching. Learn a message, assign its action, then save: a 16-action grid offers Relearn and Unlearn, with supported controller profiles and MCU/HUI controls.
- A shared web/iPad Perform screen with program and scene navigation, quick controls and mixer, plus a Tuning tab. Hybrid-style mixer, sequencer and drum-grid layouts, touch-sized controls and screen pages instead of scrolling. Play/Stop controls the connected FM-1 over USB.
- Ten named and numbered GLO pages bring device-wide controls together, including themes, display, USB, recording and performance preferences.

The printable guide includes screen illustrations, control references and step-by-step workflows for firmware settings, sound editing, programs, scenes, tuning, sequencing, MIDI, USB host setup and the existing web/iPad editors.
USB-only release. Direct pedals/controllers require a powered adapter or hub. Installing over SynthMaven 3.5 or later keeps your programs, sounds and settings; installing over stock firmware or SynthMaven 3.0 resets them. Export a backup first. Older SynthMaven backups require their matching firmware for restoration.
If an installation stopped
Nothing is lost. Until an installation finishes, the FM-1 starts in update mode: its screen shows UPDATING, or stays dark. That holds even after switching it off.
Connect it, open this page and press Find FM-1. The page offers to resume, and continues from the start of the write.
Report a problem
If the FM-1 crashed, don't switch it off: the crash record survives a restart, not a power cycle. Connect it and read the record, then send it with what you were doing.
If the FM-1 won't start
With m-bootloader: switch off, hold PLAY and switch on for its recovery menu, or hold REC for USB download mode.
Without it, the FM-1's USB recovery route can put a firmware back from a computer: felucca-bsp recovery tools
